The P-1S and O-2 visas are U.S. nonimmigrant employment visas for essential support personnel accompanying P-1 or O-1 principal visa holders. P-1S visas are for support staff of P-1 visa holders (coaches, trainers, exercise riders, grooms, team officials), while O-2 visas are for support staff of O-1 visa holders. These visas allow qualified personnel to work in the U.S. alongside the primary P-1 or O-1 Principal.

Key requirements include:

  • Integral role: The support person must have a critical and essential support role to the P-1 Principal
  • Prior relationship: The support personnel must have previously worked with/for the P-1 or O-1 holder and have specialized knowledge of the sport/activity
  • Limited scope: P-1S/O-2 beneficiaries can only work for the sponsoring employer/P-1 Principal in the capacity described; they cannot take on unrelated jobs or work for a different P-1 Principal
  • Evidence in support of the petition may include:
    • A support letter from the petitioner/P-1 sponsor
    • Expert letters or testimonials
    • Photos, articles, credentials, or pay stubs demonstrating a prior working relationship
    • Awards or prizes in the role or in conjunction with the Principal

Other requirements include:

  • A consultation from a qualifying U.S. organization
  • A contract with the sponsoring employer/P-1 Principal
  • An itinerary of competitions or events
  • Admissibility: All general U.S. admissibility requirements (no disqualifying criminal or immigration violations). P-1A visa holders cannot be employed outside the approved competitions/events or engage in any work not specified in the petition.

Permitted activities with P-1S/O-2 visas are strictly limited to supporting the approved P-1/O-1 activity. These visa holders cannot engage in independent work for others or work outside the scope of the principal’s schedule and events.

Spouses and unmarried children (under 21) of P-1S/O-2 visa holders can accompany the P-1S/O-2 on P-4 or O-3 derivative family visas (spouses may not be employed in the United States).
